Embrace Flexibility

One thing is for certain – things will change.  Even the ancient mystics wrote that every ending is a beginning and every beginning is an ending.  The alchemists referred to this as “rotatio” or “circulatio,” meaning “in a circle.”  Even between the beginnings and the endings, things change.  The Vision you set for yourself may evolve, grow, and become something more meaningful for you as you pursue your dream.

The wonder of life is that we were born to grow and create.  We are all part of an amazing creation that is ever-changing and evolving, and we too must be always changing and re-inventing.  Darwin wrote,  “It’s not the strongest of the species who survives, or even the smartest; it’s the one who can adapt to change.”

As you pursue your Vision and work through the steps, things will come up that may change your direction.  Plans have detours, but they also have surprises.  As you journey toward your Vision and the world responds to you and your intentions, you will grow and learn in ways you never knew were possible.  Stay ready to improvise, to accept, to adapt, and to embrace the “new” that comes into your life.  It is there to move you closer to your core and your soul.

You may have to revisit some of the Steps as you move forward, because you may uncover more things to toss into the dumpster, create new defining moments, or find new facts that you must re-interpret.  But it all will lead you toward your Wildest Dream and bring you more than you ever imagined. Embrace the attitude that by focusing on your Vision and declaring your intention, you will bring into your life what you need -- and that no matter what happens, you will be your best.

Don’t worry about what might come next. Worry doesn’t change what will happen tomorrow, but it takes away from what you can enjoy today.  If you are in difficult place, struggling or weary from the journey, revisit your Vision and feel the magic to carry you forward.  “If you are going through hell, keep going,” said Winston Churchill.

So stay nimble, stay flexible, and learn to embrace and thrill to change!

“When you reach the end of your life, you don’t want your tombstone to say ‘I muddled through.’  You want it to say, ‘I wouldn’t have missed it for anything.  It was beyond my Wildest Dreams.’”

Exercises

1.)  In a quiet time, imagine how things might change as you move along your journey to you Vision.  Imagine how you might grow or how things may come into your life unexpectedly.  If it feels scary, try to imagine embracing that change, and use your interpretation skills to make that change into something good.  Try to condition yourself to automatically see change coming into your life as an opportunity to move forward toward your dream.

2.)  Write a long term Vision for yourself.  Start with today, and write about your life, your work, your family, your friends, your leisure time, your spiritual life, your dreams.  The do the same for five years from now.  Write in the present tense and describe all the same things; what you are doing, how you are living, and what you want for yourself.  Go out ten years, and fifteen if you can, and again write in the present tense about your life, your dreams, your work, your leisure.  Read over each of these times often and let them become a part of your thoughts and your intentions.

3) Go to the Flexibility and Change Forum and talk about your long term Vision, the things that are changing for you, even change in the world in general.

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams”

Eleanor Roosevelt
