When you are between jobs, careers or relationships,
have no fear. Motivational speaker and author Gail
Blanke says those should be the best times of your life.
In her book, Between Trapezes: Flying into a New Life
with the Greatest of Ease (Rodale Books, $22.95,
hardcover), Blanke encourages readers to reject "the
routine and predictable in favor of the courageous and
serendipitous."
Blanke, who coached U.S. Sen. Bob Graham of Florida
during his recent presidential campaign, says her book
is about finding the juice in life.
"When change comes, we want to fix it right away," she
writes. "The result is that we move too quickly into our
next life and discover that it's pretty much the same as
the one we left behind.
"We miss the fact that the real thrill in life is not in
the landing -- it's in the flying."
To help readers embrace flying into a new life, Blanke
offers five steps:
Imagine exactly what your idea of "good" looks
like.
Let go of the old trapeze -- the old
title, the old role, the old view of yourself.
Listen to discover new possibilities,
new solutions, new methods of operation.
Never confuse falling with failing.
Practice distinguishing between fact
and interpretation.
This book "will enable you to make changes and reinvent
yourself in ways that will truly propel your life
forward," Blanke writes in the prologue. "So step into
the big top with me. Climb up the pedestal far above the
crowd. Look out at that great, vast, beautiful unknown
and take my hand.
"We've got some flying to do."
